It is important to stay organized as you search for a new job as a teacher.

When looking for a job as a teacher, you need to be organized. The more organized you are, the easier your search will be. You should keep both an electronic and a paper trail of each school that you apply to. Start a folder for each school to keep all communication and other information you gather. Here are some more ideas to help keep you organized.

Keep a List of Applications

When you apply to a school district or an individual school, write down the name of the school or district, and the date you applied. Keeping a running list will help you know where you stand with each school at a glance. Create a table with the following information to help keep you organized, and ensure that you do not forget any information.

  • Name of school or district
  • Date applied
  • Interview date
  • Date thank you note sent

Keep a List of Contacts

In a separate folder for each school or district, you need to keep a variety of information. In a paper folder, collect every piece of communication that you receive from the school, and a copy of all information you send to them through the mail. Keeping a paper copy of everything you send, with signatures and all, will help you remember exactly what you sent to each school.

In an electronic folder on your computer, save all information you gather online. This includes emails, contact names and phone numbers, and other research information that you do for each school. You should also save an electronic copy of information including cover letters, thank you notes and anything else you have typed up to send to the school.

Send Thank You Notes

Sending a thank you note as quickly as possible after an interview is essential. The best thank you notes are those written by hand and sent through the mail. If that is not possible, or if you choose not to go that route, you can send your thank you note by e-mail. When interviewing, be sure to write down the name of all persons included in the interview room, and send a separate thank you note to each one.

A lot of work goes into a job search, most of it happening behind the scenes. The more organized you keep your job search information, the more smoothly the search will go. It can be difficult to find a job, so be sure to do your research, and follow up on every lead.
